Mind Mapping for Picture Book Writers
Some writers love outlines, others feel boxed in by them.
Mind mapping offers a third option—especially useful in the early stages of picture book development.
Why Mind Mapping Works for PBs
Picture books aren’t just linear narratives… they’re emotional, visual, rhythmic.
Mind mapping allows you to:
- Capture images without sequencing them too soon.
- Explore emotional beats alongside plot ideas.
- Hold multiple possibilities at once.
How to Start
Begin with the heart of the idea in the center:
- A character
- A question
- A moment
From there, branch outward. Brainstorm connections in various categories:
- Feelings
- Images
- Possible obstacles
- Repeated patterns
There’s no wrong order.
The goal is connection, not control. Draw lines between the things that obviously connect – and let them lead you to other connections.
When to Switch Tools
Mind mapping isn’t forever.
It’s a bridge—from intuition to intention.
Once patterns emerge, you can begin shaping structure.
