How does this course compare to the children’s writing course taught by The Institute of Children’s Literature, which is also a home study course (10 lessons, $697)? Are lessons submitted to you and returned with comments, editing or what ever the lesson requires. How successful have the writers who took your course been since graduating?

I appreciate you taking the time to read this. I hope to hear back, if you have the time. Thank you – Sue

hello emma–need some guidance—do you know of any effective home study program in children’s book writing and illustration—–thanking you and awaiting your reply

    Dear Sue,

Other than the price – Just Write for Kids works out to about $37 a lesson, whereas the Institute of Childrens Lit is $69 a lesson – the main difference is that Just Write for Kids is designed to be an independent study course. This way you can work at your own pace. There are lessons each week (which you can accomplish according to your own time frame), and there is always the option of posting questions or comments for me which I respond to as needed, but instead of critiquing all the work each week, I provide sample answers to the week’s assignment questions against which to measure your own. In the Comments section of each lesson, you can post questions for me and also read other students’ questions over time, as well as my answers to them.

This course also comes with a number of unique bonuses, such as an editing checklist, a children’s book writer’s resource guide, and query and submission guidelines, as well as a free month in the Children’s Book Hub membership site and a discount on any of my editorial services.

A number of the students who have taken the course have gone on to have their manuscripts published, acquired agents and also written other books.

    All good wishes,
    Emma Hamilton

    Manuel –

My Just Write for Kids course is a very effective home study program for writing picture books. While it focuses more on writing than illustrating, there is a great deal of information about illustration as well, and by the end of the eight week program you will have a completed, submission-ready manuscript, plus a number of bonuses such as editing checklists, a children’s book writer’s resource guide, query and submission guidelines, a free month in my Children’s Book Hub membership site and a discount on any of my editorial services.

There are other home study courses out there, such those offered by the Children’s Literature Institute, the Gotham Writers Workshop, WritersDigest.com and MediaBistro.com.
