Giving Thanks for Mentors, Critique Partners, & Book Friends

As writers, we often focus so intently on craft, revisions, and submission strategy that we forget to pause and appreciate the people who walk this path with us. But the truth is, no writer succeeds in a vacuum. We are held up and buoyed by a community of mentors, critique partners, teachers, colleagues, and friends who remind us—daily—that we are not alone.

So this season, I’m reflecting on that community. I’m thinking of the editors who’ve guided and helped elevate my writing. The agent who advocated on my behalf. The critique partners who spotted the clunky wording I was too close to see. The writer friend who texted after a rejection just to say, “Keep going. I believe in this story.”

These people are the lifeblood of a writing life.

They remind us that our ideas matter. They help us grow not just in craft, but in resilience. They read our first drafts and our fifteenth. They celebrate the wins and help us reframe the losses. They understand, more than anyone else, what it means to pour your heart onto the page.

If you have those people in your life, take a moment to thank them. Send a note, write a post, buy them a coffee. Let them know they’ve made a difference.

And if you’re still seeking that kind of community, know that it’s out there. Join or start a critique group. Attend a workshop. Say hello to someone else in the Zoom chat. Building a network takes time, but it’s worth every step.

This work is too challenging—and too beautiful—to do alone.
