Can I Make a Living Writing Children’s Books?

One of the least glamorous truths about publishing is that most writers do not earn full-time livings from books alone.

This surprises many aspiring authors. Publishing often looks financially glamorous from the outside. But advances vary dramatically, royalties fluctuate, and books can take years to produce. Most children’s authors maintain multiple streams of income.

Many work in writing-adjacent fields, such as teaching, editing, or freelance copywriting. Some speak. Others coach. Many work entirely separate day jobs. This is not evidence of failure! It is simply the economic reality of creative work.

The good news is that many writers genuinely enjoy the interconnected careers they build around storytelling. Teaching, for instance, often keeps writers creatively engaged and connected to literary community and/or their audience.

It’s also important to understand that publishing careers tend to build slowly. Very few authors experience overnight success. More commonly, careers develop incrementally over years through persistence, multiple books, relationships, reputation, and consistency. I had an acting teacher whose mantra was, “Never mind the talent – do you have the tenacity?” I think this is true of any creativfe endeavor, writing included.

The writers who thrive long-term are those who approach publishing not as a lottery ticket, but as a sustained creative life – who enjoy the process as much as, if not more than, the product.
